Blessing Is Not Just About Possessions
“Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions’†(Luke 12:15 NIV).
Many wealthy people wish they had friends. Some of the most prominent people in the world are some of the saddest people on earth. Even their money cannot hide their unhappiness and displeasure with life. It is so sad when a person spends his entire lifetime trying to get rich, only to find that when he finally strikes it rich, he is still unhappy, dissatisfied with life and sad. Jesus lets us know in Luke 12:15 that a man’s life and happiness do not consist of his things, his possessions, or his money. In other words, all of the possessions in the world will not bring him contentment. They will not buy happiness.
The rich man of Luke 12:19 declared that, after working hard for many years accumulating great wealth and all of the goods this world could offer him, he could now â€eat, drink and be merry.†He had dedicated his whole life to accumulating great possessions to be enjoyed on earth. But God had other plans for him. After calling the man a fool for working selfishly for a lifetime, just so he could retire in pleasure and ease, God said that his last evening on earth would be that very night.
